Founded originally as an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta in 1878, Rangoon College was established as Government College in the early 1900s and in 1920 upgraded to University College. In the same year, the secular University College merged with the Baptist-affiliated Judson College to become Rangoon University. The 1964 University Education Act separated several professional departments from the university, establishing them as separate universities. At that point, the university was renamed the Rangoon Arts and Sciences University, concerned only with liberal arts, sciences and law. In 1989, the university was renamed the University of Yangon. The University of Yangon has two campuses: Main Campus and Hlaing Campus. Hlaing Campus is located slightly north of the Main Campus within Yangon City.

The University of Yangon comprises 12 Arts departments and 9 Science departments, totaling 21 academic departments, offering Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. Programmes. The Arts departments include Myanmar, English, Geography, History, Psychology, Philosophy, Law, Oriental Studies, International Relations andPolitical Science, Anthropology, Archaeology, and Library and Information Studies. The Science departments include Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Zoology, Botany, Geology, Computer Studies, Industrial Chemistry, and Environment and Water Studies.
